Todd McMillan Australian
Todd McMillan is an Australian artist who works across a multitude of medium including, photography, video and later painting. His work references text of art history, philosophy and literature. Exploring themes, recurrent of Romanticism and the sublime. McMillian's visual navigation of field based records, including himself as the protagonist extends thoughts around sincerity, failure and hopelessness by acts of endurance and negotiating with the landscape mediating an awareness to our purpose. Todd McMillian's practice withdraws obstacles of the 21st Century, instead, we are seduced by melancholy, emptiness and solitude of the sea or sky, we are invited by the artist to reconsider our engagement and impact upon the world.
Todd McMillan's work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows internationally. Major exhibitions include, 'New Matter' Art Gallery NSW, Sydney (2016), 'Ten Years of Tears', MONA, Hobart (2013), Australian Video Art, Barbican, London. In 2006 he was the winner of the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship. Hs work is held in many private collections worldwide, selected public collections include, Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Sydney, Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia, Museum of Old and New Art, Tasmania, Australia, John Kaldor Collection.
